The Hike

Stewart Falls is a very scenic three-tiered waterfall that is over 200 feet tall located on the east side of Mt Timpanogos in the North Fork of Provo Canyon near the Sundance Ski Resort. “It amazing to have such a beautiful and scenic place that is so close and has such easy access," said one visitor. The Stewart Falls hike is great for younger kids because it is such an easy hike.

The hike to Stewart Falls has very little elevation change and travels through aspens, ferns, oak brush and mountain meadows, offering views of the back side of Mount Timpanogos and Sundance resort. When you go definitely take a pair of binoculars and a camera.

It is a fairly easy hike along a well-maintained trail, with signs marking critical junctions. Hiking time one-way is about 1 hour for most people. (Guests at Sundance Resort can hike to the falls via a shorter trail). A fee of per vehicle is charged for day-use along the paved Alpine Scenic Loop Road.

Trailhead

You can get to Stewart Falls on many trails but there are two main trails.

One trail starts from the top of Ray’s lift at Sundance Ski Resort. Rays’s lift operates during the summer and provides access to hiking and mountain biking trails. Take the lift up to Ray’s Summit and then trek through mountain forest and across the meadow to the falls. Allow 2 hours hiking time. Refer to www.sundance.com for details about the hike to Stewart Falls starting from the top of Ray’s lift.

The main trail starts at Aspen Grove with an approximately four mile round trip hike. The hike from Aspen Grove begins above the amphitheater at Theater-in-the-Pines picnic area. It's next to the BYU Aspen Grove Camp on the Provo Canyon North Fork Road. You can also start in the parking lot where the trail that leads to Mt. Timpanogos starts. The trail starts at the far end of the parking lot, heading East. Shortly there after the trail switches back as you head up the ridge (this is the most difficult part of the trail because of the incline. The trail continues and is well marked and easy to find.
