Battle Creek and Grove Creek Loop
A great day loop for those seeking a day hike is to continue up the canyon connect to the Great Western Trail and then connect to the trail coming down Grove Creek canyon.
- Location: Near Peasant Grove, UT two small canyons on the front side of Mount Timpanogos
- Distance: 8.5 miles
- Destination: Large Meadow on the Great Western Trail
- Time: 5-6 hours
- Elevation gain: 2350 feet
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Best Season to Hike: Late spring (after snow clears) through mid to late fall
- Reference: North-central Utah, just east of Salt Lake City, in the Mount Olympus Wilderness.
- User groups: Hikers
- Permits: No permits are required. Parking and access are free.

The Hike
After the Battle Creeks waterfall, the trail mellows out along the creek, crossing a log footbridge. Cross the creek one more time, leave it and stay high above it as you enter scrub oaks. The oaks lead you into a series of grassy meadows. Check out the view down the canyon and into the Utah County.
 Battle Creek and Grove Creek Loop – Utah County
At 2.46 miles you come to the trail junction for the Great Western Trail. Turn North or left and follow the Great Western Trail through several series of meadows, you will arrive in the largest meadow of the trip. This is the destination of the hike. Grove Creek Junction is at 3.4 miles into the hike.

After the Grove Creek Junctions, you will enter a grove of aspen trees and and then Grove Creek Canyon. The trail will start to drop as it heads to the Grove Creek Waterfall. The trail from the waterfall has dangerous drop-offs and loose rock. Beware in these section your footing can be unsteady.
Follow the Grove Creek trail parking area, hike down to the creek behind the restroom and follow the dirt road back to the Battle Creek Trailhead, completing your loop.

Trailhead
The trailhead is easy to find. From the town of Pleasant Grove, just follow 200 S to the east side of town. The street is also known as Battle Creek Drive and it dead-ends at the trailhead. You will pass the water tank that collects the water from the creek for Pleasant Grove city.
If coming from I-15 take exit 287 and drive east on Utah State Road 92 (called Alpine Highway) to the mouth of American Fork Canyon. As you enter the canyon, Utah State Road 146 branches uphill to the south (right). Take SR146 that becomes 100 East in Pleasant Grove, UT about 4.8 miles to 200 South in Pleasant Grove (PG). Ironically, you will pass the Pleasant Grove Ranger District office on the left before you turn east on 200 South in PG. Follow 200 South to 200 East, which is Battle Creek Drive. |
